Refining My Debating Skills at 4Debate

Article by Aba H

It is the beginning of a new year and I’m wondering what new things I can do to spice life up a bit. Apart from my list of things to do before I turn 25, I’ve been thinking about really putting myself out of my comfort zone and seeing what I ca

n achieve as my quotation for this year is “life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” So of course when I got an invitation to join a debating group called 4Debate (based in Kigali, Rwanda) I couldn’t refuse. Plus I’ve wanted to polish speaking skills for some time now.

The 4Debate group was created by Akaliza Gara after a debate she had had with a friend and missed that kind of open interactive platform from her school days where she could share, be challenged and argue! “I wanted to start the group to encourage people to be accepting of other people’s views.

On my first night at the group, I guess I wasn’t too shabby as a member of the team supporting the legalisation of abortion in Rwanda. We lost the debate but I look forward to getting out there and refining my debating skills this year!
