‘Many of us have learnt to settle for the world as it is, not the world that ought to be’

Article by Aba H

Yesterday my friend shared a link with me for a Ted talk by Chimamanda Ngozi call “We should all be feminists”.

Now, I do have a few strong views about gender roles but I still wouldn’t classify myself as a feminist. The word seems so heavy and harsh. The perception just doesn’t resonate with me.

Of course, I don’t agree with forced marriages, women having to give up their work and women making life changing decisions to please her man even if that is not what she really wants. But I also do think that both men and women have their contributions to make towards society within the context of a system that works.

As you can see, I’m not quite sure what feminism means for me but what I know is that we need to do our part in ensuring that both men and women have equal access to opportunities and resources in Africa. We can’t move forward as a continent if half our population don’t have opportunities and resources and aren’t treated with basic dignity.
